It’s not everyday I find myself scouting the internet for information on my own college. Today I did though, and I came across an article written in July 2008 that announced the Princeton Review has awarded Emerson the title of, “the Most Gay-Friendly College.”
It makes sense really. There is an openness and welcoming feeling throughout the campus. Students have taken the idea in with open arms; phrases like, “gay by may” are used to describe students who are expected to open up their true feelings here at Emerson.

Many conversations between straight Emerson men and other college students throughout the nation lead to friendly humor about the percentage of gay students here on Boylston Street. Rather than straight men acting homophobic and critical, it has become an acknowledged part of the Emerson Community.
I often answered this question with the standard- “75%!” I loved seeing people’s reaction to that. Especially when I wanted to spite all the close-minded bigots in my hometown, but that number seems a bit inflated. Realistically my vote is for half- but it is impossible to know right? So take the poll to give me an idea of what you think.
Also during my internet travels I came across Urban Dictionaries view on this same topic. Well, let me just say urban Dictionary is no Princeton Review–but the message is there:
A very liberal Theatre/Communications/film school on Boston Common where the biggest trends are cigarettes and homosexuality. Emerson has produced some of the most influential people in the entertainment industry. I mean,The Fonz went there- it is the most chill school of all time
“He’s gay, addicted to cigarettes, and has his own T.V. show? He must have gone to Emerson College.”
